Turkey's currency is the Turkish lira (TL or ₺). Prices in shops, restaurants and on public transport are in lira, although some hotels and tour services quote in euros. A few simple habits make paying easy.
Cards work almost everywhere
Visa and Mastercard are accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops and most taxis' card machines. Contactless payment is common. If your card asks whether to pay in lira or in your home currency, choosing lira usually gives you a better rate.
Keep some cash for small things
Small cafés, street food, the Grand Bazaar's smaller stalls and public toilets are easier with cash. Exchange offices (döviz) in the old city and around Taksim usually give better rates than the airport. ATMs are everywhere; check your bank's foreign withdrawal fees.
Public transport
Metro, tram, ferries and buses use the Istanbulkart. You can buy and top it up at machines in stations, with cash or card.
Tipping
- Restaurants: around 5–10% if service is not already included.
- Hotels: a small amount for the porter or housekeeping is appreciated.
- Drivers: tipping is not expected. If you were happy with the service, a small tip is always welcome, but it is your choice.
Paying for your transfer
With us the price is fixed when you book and does not change. Depending on the option you choose, you pay the driver in cash or by card online. There is nothing extra to pay for tolls, bridges or waiting time described in our Booking Terms.
